The Start2Finish team proudly representing Canada at the 2025 World Literacy Summit, held at the University of Oxford.

Every two years, the World Literacy Summit brings together education leaders, researchers, nonprofit organizations, and advocates from around the world to address one of the most critical global issues of our time, literacy. Hosted by the World Literacy Foundation, the summit takes place at Oxford University and is the largest international gathering dedicated to literacy and educational equity. It welcomes participants from more than 85 countries, representing over two-thirds of the world’s population.

The summit is a global platform for sharing ideas, highlighting innovation, and inspiring action to close the literacy gap. It is a space where urgent challenges are met with meaningful solutions, and where the collective power of knowledge, research, and grassroots work is celebrated.

This year, Start2Finish was deeply honoured to not only be named among the top six literacy organizations in the world, but to be recognized as the first runner-up for the 2025 World Literacy Award. This recognition is a meaningful reflection of the progress we are making here in Canada and of the incredible community that powers our mission every day.

At Start2Finish, our goal is to break the cycle of poverty by supporting children from marginalized communities through access to free educational resources and after-school learning programs. We are committed to ensuring that every child, regardless of background or circumstance, has the opportunity to thrive.

Our work is grounded in research and centred in community. Through programs like our Running and Reading Club, Brainworx virtual learning, Junior Coach leadership program, Backpack Program, and The LIT Book Vending Machines Program, we nurture not just academic skills but also self-esteem, resilience, and a sense of belonging. These programs give children the tools to succeed in the classroom and beyond.

Being acknowledged on the global stage is a moment of pride for our entire community. It highlights the growing impact of our mission and reminds us that local action can inspire global progress. More importantly, it affirms the value of continuing to invest in the potential of every child.

To all who have walked alongside us, our volunteers, donors, educators, partners, and champions, thank you. This recognition belongs to you as well. Your belief in a more equitable future makes this work possible.

Let’s keep going. Help us reach more children, open more doors, and build a future where every child can dream, learn, and lead.
