Gus’s Story

The R&R Club empowered Gus with confidence to set goals and EXCEED them!

“Focus was not a strength of Gus's and, as a result, he also had low confidence in what he could do. We placed Gus on Coach Catherine's team. Coach Catherine is extremely patient, encouraging and inspiring. When Gus joined the club in grade 3, his reading level was equivalent to grade 1. Over the months, Gus became more engaged with the program and embraced the schedule of activities.  His attendance improved greatly. He was starting to like this program! As a result, we began seeing his confidence build as he was presented with "shout outs" (recognition) for his accomplishments. He started to focus on the activities (running, peer interaction and reading) and started setting goals. Working with Coach Catherine, he is now meeting and exceeding some of these goals he's set, like increasing the number of laps he runs weekly, completing his journal independently, and reading on his own. His focus and confidence have improved over time with his participation in the Running & Reading Club, and his reading level has increased by 2 grade levels!”
