Live mentorship and learning enrichment for school aged students.

Positive education is defined as education for both traditional skills and happiness. In Canada, according to UNICEF, many children are experiencing high grades but reporting low levels of life satisfaction. Children from low-income and equity-deserving communities are more likely to struggle both academically and socially/emotionally. There is substantial evidence that positive education is a solution that teaches students skills for happiness. These skills are called Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies, and include decision-making, coping skills, problem-solving skills, relaxation and creative brainstorming.

Brainworx! is hosted 2x per week after school for participants and, unlike many virtual after-school programs, is led by live volunteer Coaches and mentors. By providing a flexible enrichment opportunity for students, Brainworx! allows children to improve their literacy and SEL skills without in-person barriers.

  • Yes! During the COVID-19 pandemic, we evaluated participants in Brainworx! for self-regulation, psychological distress, physical activity, and self-efficacy. We found that through lock-downs and restrictions, our students maintained their physical, mental and social-emotional well-being as a result of their participation in our program. Participants reported engaging in 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity regularly as they were engaged in the program throughout the pandemic.
